URI picked for Ninth in Atlantic-10 pre-season poll

Tuesday, October 08, 2013

The first shot has been fired, and for the URI Rams' basketball team...maybe there's room for that chip to grow into a boulder on the shoulder.

At the Atlantic-10 men's basketball media day in Brooklyn, NY Tuesday, Rhode Island was selected to finish 9th out of the league's 13 teams in the annual pre-season poll.  Additionally, the A-10's leading returning scorer, URI's Xavier Munford, was chosen for the league's pre-season 2nd team in voting conducted by media members and the conference head coaches.

Virginia Commonwealth, runner-up in 2012, was the pre-season pick to win the conference.  Saint Louis, the defending champion, was chosen #2.  LaSalle and UMass were selected for 3rd and 4th, respectively.

Chaz Williams of Massachusetts and Saint Louis’ Dwayne Evans, both 2012-13 First Team All-Conference selections, were named to the 2013-14 Preseason All-Conference First Team. Joining the pair are three second-team selections from last March, Tyreek Duren of La Salle and VCU’s Treveon Graham and Juvonte Reddic.

The Preseason Second Team All-Conference includes league newcomer Sherrod Wright of George Mason, and shot blocker Isaiah Armwood from George Washington, who also earned a spot on the Preseason All-Defensive Team. Rhode Island’s Xavier Munford is on the second team along with Saint Joseph’s teammates Ronald Roberts, Jr., and Langston Galloway.

The 2013-14 season tips off on Friday, Nov. 8 with seven Atlantic 10 teams in action. URI will open with the Maine Black Bears that night at 7:30 at the Ryan Center.  Conference play will begin Tuesday, Jan. 7th, and the year will culminate with the 2014 Atlantic 10 Men’s Basketball Championship at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. March 12-16.
